Texas School for the Deaf Statement
The Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) is aware of a recent article containing allegations about the school and its services. The school cannot comment on ongoing litigation and also cannot violate student privacy laws that protect its students and families. The school did provide a response to the publication, despite the statement otherwise, regarding questions to which TSD could legally respond.
First and foremost, TSD wants to express its deep appreciation for its teachers and support staff, who work tirelessly to provide a free and appropriate public education to TSD students. The work they do is central to TSD’s mission and is not reflected in the article.
The Special Needs Department at TSD was restructured several years ago, prior to Superintendent Bailey’s arrival in July, 2023, to ensure that students with additional needs were not placed in a more restrictive environment than necessary. However, TSD continues to support individualized educational services based on each student’s needs. TSD is proud of its long-standing philosophy of providing a high-quality education for Deaf and hard of hearing students across Texas. The safety, growth, and success of our students – and the professionals who serve them – remain the school’s highest priority.
In accordance with state and federal laws, TSD works to maintain quality educational programming. While the article cited TSD board policy regarding admissions, it did not include information provided by TSD referring to the basis for that policy in state law. TSD’s board policy regarding admissions uses the language from Chapter 30 of the Texas Education Code. The admissions criteria in the article have been included in state law since 2006.
