Ayer, 19 de agosto de 2021, el Comisionado de Educación anunció lo siguiente:

La guía en este documento está autorizada por la Orden Ejecutiva GA-38, que tiene el efecto de la ley estatal bajo la Sección 418.012 del Código de Gobierno de Texas. Tenga en cuenta que las disposiciones de los cubrebocas de GA-38 no se están imponiendo como resultado de un litigio en curso. Habrá más orientación disponible después de que se resuelvan los problemas judiciales.

Dear Parents and Guardians, 

Our summer programs are finished and the opening of school is just around the corner! We are preparing for a safe and productive school year! 

I want to reach out to all our families with information about vaccinations. At this point in time vaccinations are readily available for all of us over the age of 12 across the state. Many doctor’s offices are now equipped to vaccinate adults and students over the age of 12. 

We would like to see as many as we can of our students and staff vaccinated when we open this fall. All of the current hospitalizations and disease numbers represent unvaccinated individuals. It is becoming more important by the day to ensure all of our staff and students are vaccinated. Please make every effort to be sure your child is vaccinated prior to the start of school. If your child is already vaccinated just email a copy of his or her vaccine card to [email protected]. 

We also want to help you make the best decisions for your family. We have posted a web page https://www.tsd.state.tx.us/apps/pages/covid19vaccine with lots of information about the availability of the vaccines and a lot of important resource information. Please feel free to call our Health Center (512-462-5686, 512-462-5717 or VP 512-410-1024), or our Public Information Officer (512-462-5372) for more information on the vaccine. 

For those of you who are unable to get your student vaccinated before returning to TSD, Tarrytown Pharmacy will be hosting a vaccine clinic on our campus on August 18th. 

If you would like for your child to be vaccinated at TSD, please complete the information on this link Texas School for the Deaf COVID Vaccine Sign-Up. 

Also, enclosed is our revised Health and Safety Plan protocols for this coming school year. We think it will give you a good idea about what to expect on campus. All students with permission will be COVID tested upon their return to school. We will test residential students on Sunday, August 15th. We will offer testing for day students on Saturday August 14th from 8:00 am to noon in the TSD Health Center. Athletes will be tested upon their return to sports camps. 

If you do not want your child to be COVID tested on campus, please bring positive proof of screening/testing within the past 48 hours to the TSD Health Center.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

We want to inform you that a TSD student tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, April 17. The student was last on campus Friday, April 16.

Our team met on Saturday, April 17 to conduct contact tracing and determine next steps. All parents of students and staff that may have had close contact with the student have been contacted. In an abundance of caution, we conducted COVID screening tests for all students on the homegoing charter bus with the positive student prior to their return to TSD. (As of last evening, all those students tested negative.) We have a group of students from school and athletics that we will continue to monitor.

Please continue to practice all your safety protocols. COVID-19 is still with us. If someone in your immediate family or extended family circle tests positive please let us know immediately.

The student’s principal(s) and teachers have been informed of any students involved that should return to remote online instruction on Monday.

We remind all staff and families to continue to conduct daily screenings for symptoms the CDC has determined may be associated with COVID-19 and to remain at home if you are experiencing the following:

 Fever at / above 100.0°F

 New uncontrolled cough

 Difficulty breathing

 Shortness of breath

 Severe muscle aches

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

We want to inform you that a staff member in high school notified us this evening (Thursday, December 17)

that they tested positive for COVID-19. The contact tracing has been completed and both students and their

families who had close contact with this individual have been informed, and the same is true for the staff

who had close contact.

Each of the students who had close contact with the positive test confirmed staff were tested and placed in

quarantine in designated housing on campus until homegoing arrangements can be made. Staff who had

close contact were advised to quarantine at home and work remotely tomorrow.

We never want to learn of a positive case but we are becoming confident that our processes are working and

our follow-up is designed to protect the health and welfare of our staff and students.

After homegoing tomorrow, the classrooms impacted will be deep cleaned and disinfected.

We remind all staff and families to continue to conduct daily screenings for symptoms the CDC has

determined may be associated with COVID-19 and to remain at home if you are experiencing the following:

• Fever at / above 100.0°F

• New uncontrolled cough

• Difficulty breathing

• Shortness of breath

• Severe muscle aches

• Severe headaches (especially with fever)

• New loss of taste or smell

• Diarrhea

With these rising case numbers, we are still very vulnerable – so let’s complete this difficult 2020 by staying

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

We want to inform you that a Student Life employee was test-confirmed for COVID-19. The staff member was last on campus Monday, November 2^nd and tested positive today, November 4^th.

Determining the degree of “close contact” the employee had with students and co-workers is always difficult to assess due to the nature of the work with students in our dorms. We believe that staff and students were masked at all times but we cannot be absolutely certain that 6 feet of social distancing was 100% implemented in every interaction. In an abundance of caution, we are contacting families and staff that we believe may have had close contact with the individual and requesting that they self-quarantine for 14 days before returning to school.

The student’s principal(s) and teachers have been informed that the students involved can return to remote online instruction until they complete the quarantine period. We look forward to having them back on campus soon.

We remind all staff and families to continue to conduct daily screenings for symptoms the CDC has determined may be associated with COVID-19 and to remain at home if you are experiencing the following:

Queremos informarle que a un empleado de Vida Estudiantil se le confirmó la prueba de COVID-19. El miembro del personal estuvo en el plantel por última vez el lunes, 2 de noviembre y dio positivo hoy, 4 de noviembre.

La determinación del grado de “contacto cercano” que el empleado tuvo con los estudiantes y compañeros de trabajo fue difícil de evaluar debido a la naturaleza del trabajo con los estudiantes en nuestros dormitorios. Creemos que el personal y los estudiantes estuvieron con cubre bocas en todo momento, pero no podemos estar absolutamente seguros de que los 6 pies de distanciamiento social se implementaron al 100%. Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

We want to inform you that a Food Service employee in our cafeteria was test-confirmed for COVID-19. The staff member was last on campus Monday, October 19th and began exhibiting symptoms on Tuesday, October 20 and was tested. Today, October 21, we were notified that the test result was positive.

The employee was primarily working in the back of the cafeteria and staff who may have had close contact with the staff have been notified. Upon review of security camera footage and interviews with staff we determined that no students had “close contact” with the employee.

Our cafeteria workers have been following all COVID-19 precautions including wearing masks, gloves and social distancing. By way of reminder, as noted in our TSD Reopening Guidelines, students are separated in small groups in the Cafeteria at tables with plexiglass dividers. The entire cafeteria will be disinfected this evening in accordance with our protocols.

We remind all staff and families to continue to conduct daily screenings for symptoms the CDC has determined may be associated with COVID-19 and to remain at home if you are experiencing the following:

• Fever at / above 100.0°F

• New uncontrolled cough

• Difficulty breathing

Queremos informarle que un empleado del Servicio de Alimentos en nuestra cafetería fue confirmado por prueba de COVID-19. El miembro del personal estuvo en el plantel por última vez el lunes 19 de octubre y comenzó a mostrar síntomas el martes 20 de octubre y fue examinado. Hoy, 21 de octubre, se nos notificó que el resultado de la prueba fueron positivos.  

El empleado trabajaba principalmente en la parte de atras de la cafetería, y se notificó al personal que pudo haber tenido contacto cercano con el personal. Después de revisar las imágenes de las cámaras de seguridad y las entrevistas con el personal, determinamos que ningún estudiante tuvo "contacto cercano" con el empleado.

Nuestros trabajadores de la cafetería han estado siguiendo todas las precauciones de COVID-19, incluido el uso de cubre bocas, guantes y distanciamiento social. Dear TSD Parents,

We were notified on Thursday, October 15, 2020 that a student has tested positive for COVID-19. That student was last on campus on Tuesday, October 13. We immediately followed our procedures by contacting staff and families that had close contact with the student and those who may have been in the same area as the confirmed student. All physical locations involved were disinfected.

The Heath Center and HR have provided information for follow-up actions to student’s families and staff who may have had close contact. Depending on individual situations this may be self-quarantine or observation.

Once again, we remind all staff and parents to conduct daily self-screening for symptoms the CDC has determined may be associated with COVID-19.

In an effort to continue to provide a safe learning environment, we’re asking for your cooperation. Please screen your child daily before sending them to school. Keep them home and let us know if they exhibit any of the following signs of possible COVID-19:

• Fever at / above 100.0°F
• New uncontrolled cough
• Difficulty breathing
• Shortness of breath
• Severe muscle aches
• Severe headaches (especially with fever)

Dear TSD Families and Staff,

As you know our reopening teams have been preparing for the first day of school for the past 6-8 weeks. They have been implementing plans to achieve our goals and guiding principles:

• Prioritizing student and staff safety and well-being;
• Focusing on equity;
• Staying flexible.

We had all hoped that public health conditions would improve during the Summer, but as you know, they have worsened dramatically over the past month, particularly in Travis County. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has had to reconsider the pace at which he has reopened businesses and has scaled back and reversed previous decisions to try to keep Texans safe.

Due to these conditions, when we begin our school year on Aug. 17th, every student will participate in an all-virtual learning environment for the first three weeks, until September 7th. Beyond those three weeks, the current requirements are to provide students the option of receiving instruction either in-person on-campus or remote. Please keep in mind that the situation surrounding COVID-19 is dynamic and rapidly evolving on a daily basis.

We will be reaching out to families to understand your preference and to ensure students have the technology they need to engage in virtual learning. Our Principals are working diligently with teachers to prepare to open school virtually on August 17th. Our residential staff will continue to reach out to students after school hours. There will be no athletics or extracurricular activities until school resumes in person. We must submit to TEA our plan for students to receive the high-quality academic instruction that aligns with state standards and student IEPs with clearly established schedules. You can expect further communication from your child’s Principal on how instruction will be offered after September 7th.

Estimadas familias y personal de TSD,

Como saben, nuestros equipos de reapertura se han estado preparando para el primer día de clases durante las últimas 6-8 semanas. Han estado implementando planes para alcanzar nuestras metas y principios fundamentales:

Dear TSD Parents, Staff and Community,

Re: Update on Reopening Task Force Teams

Today is our last official day of school for students and I want to once again thank our teachers, staff, and families for your understanding and resilience in this unprecedented school year.

I know that many of you are anxious to learn more about how TSD will manage reopening. As I shared in my May 7th letter to the community, we have established a number of teams working on the myriad of issues related to reopening TSD. To reiterate, this is one of the most complex challenges we as a community will tackle.

The short answer to the question on all of your minds is…we are not sure what the school year will look like next year. We are preparing for a variety of scenarios some within our control and some not. Many directives will come from local, state or national health authorities or the Texas Education Agency and we must be prepared to adjust to meet these directives and remain willing to adjust.

I am providing a few Q&A responses that I hope will share some of our current thinking about reopening.

Q: Will home learning supports stop today?

A: Some parents have contacted us with the hope that some of these services can continue.

Our principals, faculty and staff will take a much-needed break today but we are looking at what home learning services we might continue to provide. The same is true for Extended Year Services.

Q: Will we follow the same school calendar adopted by the Board in February?

A: Right now, we are looking at a variety of calendar options including but not limited to; adjustment of start and end dates, additional intersessional learning blocks of time to cushion us for a potential virus resurgence and provide additional instruction for specific students, a year-round calendar, etc.

Q: What might reopening TSD look like?

A: Our reopening team is looking at different scenarios:

• • Early start that includes all students or early start that focuses on extended year services and remediation due to learning loss.
• • Options for a blended model of in-person and distance learning.
• • A face-to-face reopening with extended breaks in the calendar.

Q: How will TSD ensure that we meet the needs of all our families and students in reopening?

A: We realize that whichever model we choose, it may not work perfectly for every student and family situation. This is why we are working hard to consider every possible situation and design an approach to school that is flexible and takes into account the diverse needs, learning styles and experiences of our students and their families.

Q: How can parents provide input?

A: We plan to send a survey shortly to allow for parent input.

Q: What are the reopening task force teams looking at?

A: Here is a summary of what our teams are doing:

• Academic. This team is weighing in on reopening options, looking at how to address learning gaps as a result of COVID-19, ways to operate safely in classrooms, cafeteria and common areas, ways to reduce changing classes and increasing exposure, ways to implement the handwashing, social distancing and other health protocols and a host of other issues.

• Health and Wellness. This team is looking at health screenings for staff and students when we reopen, infection control procedures, ordering of PPE equipment, etc.

• Sanitation. This team is looking at necessary cleaning personnel and protocols, availability of disinfectant and cleaning products, Location of hand sanitizers and masks.

• Mental Health/Social Emotional. This team is looking at how to balance the need for academic instruction with the need for emotional support for both staff and students, stress responses to coming back to school, inequities in support provided remotely, need for safety and comfort and the required mask and social distancing protocols.

• Dorm Team. This team is looking at options for social distancing in dorms due to number of beds and age appropriate spaces, the possible need to remain open on weekends and the additional staff needed, how to manage extracurricular and athletic participation, disinfecting procedures for dorms, and staff training.

• Workforce Team. Staffing considerations for reopening, Testing and Screening staff procedures, Protocols for exposure or diagnosis of COVID-19, Return to Work guidelines, working from home issues, use of FFCRA.

• Transportation Team. Implementing social distancing requirements, disinfecting and cleaning, staggered schedules, homegoing concerns and implications.

Q: When will a decision be made about which scenario will be in place next school year?

A: Right now, we do not have an answer to this question. Keep in mind that the scenarios being considered are a work in progress. We will continue to gather input from parents, families, and staff in the coming weeks–because we know that we are in an ever-adapting situation.

In closing, I ask for your patience as we address all necessary precautions to ensure our students and staff can return to school safely. I hope to have another update within the next 3 weeks. We would like to thank you for your continuous support in helping your child learn from home. We have been overwhelmed by the positive attitudes of our children and their families, and are extremely proud of you all.

Referente a: Actualización de los equipos de la Fuerza especial sobre la reapertura

Hoy es nuestro último día oficial de escuela para estudiantes y quiero agradecer una vez más a nuestros maestros, personal y familias por su comprensión y capacidad de recuperación en este año escolar sin precedentes. 

Sé que muchos de ustedes están ansiosos por aprender más sobre cómo TSD logrará reabrir. Como compartí en mi carta del 7 de mayo a la comunidad, hemos establecido una serie de equipos que trabajan en las numerosas de cuestiones relacionadas con la reapertura de TSD. Para reiterar, este es uno de los desafíos más complejos que enfrentamos como comunidad.

La respuesta corta a la pregunta en todas sus mentes es ... no estamos seguros de cómo será el año escolar del próximo año. Nos estamos preparando para una variedad de escenarios, algunos bajo nuestro control y otros no. • Equipo de fuerza laboral. Consideraciones del personal para la reapertura, procedimientos de prueba y detección del personal, protocolos para la exposición o diagnóstico de COVID-19, pautas de regreso al trabajo, trabajo desde el hogar, uso de FFCRA.

• Equipo de transporte. Implementación de requisitos de distanciamiento social, desinfección y limpieza, horarios escalonados, preocupaciones e implicaciones de idas a casa.

Q: ¿Cuándo se tomará una decisión sobre qué escenario se implementará el próximo año escolar? 
 

A: En este momento, no tenemos una respuesta a esta pregunta. Tenga en cuenta que los escenarios que se consideran son un trabajo en progreso. Continuaremos recopilando información de los padres, las familias y el personal en las próximas semanas, porque sabemos que estamos en una situación en constante adaptación.

Dear Seniors and Families,

I write to you today about our decision to move to a virtual senior ceremony in place of our traditional in person graduation.  This decision was made in light of the current stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements and restrictions on large gatherings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  This very difficult decision was made with the safety of our students, staff, families and community in mind.  The virtual senior ceremony will take place on Thursday evening May 28 @ 7:00 PM.  Students and families will not come to campus to participate.

To our senior class, I know you are disappointed, upset, confused, and sad—this is not how the last three months of your senior year was supposed to go.  You’re missing out on being able to enjoy the final months of your senior year – hanging out with your friends, and enjoying the end of year traditions that we have come to honor and love at TSD.  As I have promised the Class of 2020, we will certainly leave the door open for an in person traditional graduation at a future date if it is safe.  For now, we want to enjoy celebrating together virtually in the best way we can. 

We have sent home caps and gowns for those of you who have purchased them.  Students may choose to wear them or not on May 28^th but please do hold on to them for a possible future in person event.  We will also be sending home diplomas and a few other special recognitions for our seniors.  Our senior ceremony committee is working on the details of our virtual event which will include some of our graduation traditions, but not all of them.  We will reduce the number of speeches and modify the formality of awarding of diplomas, etc.  You will be receiving an invitation and a link to this event in the next week or so.  Unfortunately, we are going to have to limit participation to seniors and their families due to the constraints of hosting this event online.

Recently, I had the honor of meeting with members of the Class of 2020.  Our sponsors and high school administrators have also done so.  The voice of our students is extremely important as we move forward in finishing this school year strongly, and honor and celebrate the Class of 2020.  Although we know an in-person ceremony is everybody’s preference, in order for the entire class to be recognized at this significant milestone, the students agreed to move forward with a virtual celebration.  I am proud of our students for expressing and sharing the difficulty of this close of senior year journey, their loss, grief and pain and the challenges of the new reality we are all living in.  The silver lining in all of this is that we will have a Class of 2020 that will be stronger, more resilient, better problem solvers, and more grateful as they move forward to the next chapter in their lives.

Estimados estudiantes del doceavo grado y familias,

Le escribo hoy sobre nuestra decisión de tener una ceremonia virtual para los estudiantes del doceavo grado en lugar de nuestra tradicional graduación en persona. Esta decisión se tomó en vista de las órdenes actuales de quedarse en casa, los requisitos de distanciamiento social y las restricciones a las grandes reuniones, como resultado de la pandemia del COVID-19. Esta muy difícil decisión se tomó con la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, personal, familias y comunidad en mente. La ceremonia virtual para los estudiantes del doceavo grado tendrá lugar el jueves, 28 de mayo a las 7:00 p.m. Los estudiantes y las familias no vendrán al campus para participar.

Para nuestra clase del doceavo grado, sé que están decepcionados, molestos, confundidos y tristes; así no es como se suponía que iban a ser los últimos tres meses de su último año. Te estás perdiendo la oportunidad de disfrutar los últimos meses de tu último año: pasar el rato con tus amigos y disfrutar de las tradiciones de fin de año que hemos honrado y amado en TSD. Dear Professionals, Families, and School Districts,

In light of the continued uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the interest of safety for all of our summer campers, staff, volunteers and statewide program participants, Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) has made the decision to cancel the 2020 summer program session.

Please know that this decision was made after thorough deliberation with our campus leadership with additional consumer input.  We make this decision with a heavy heart.  Summer programs are among our most important and enjoyable events of the year as we reach out to deaf and hard of hearing students, professionals, and families across Texas, but again your safety is paramount to us.

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

In the best interest of the health and safety of our students and staff, and in accordance with direction provided by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, TSD will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  This is disappointing news for all of us who want to be back on campus learning, growing and belonging together.  Sadly, COVID-19 has made it impossible for us be together in the same physical space, but that does not mean learning will stop.  Online teaching and learning from home is even more important now as we move into the final six weeks of the 19-20 school year.  We need to work hard and finish strong so that when we come together again, we will be an even stronger Ranger Nation!

Seniors and families, my heart aches at the losses you will experience with prom, your Spring play, senior awards, senior trip, and of course graduation.  We are disappointed that these important milestones cannot continue as scheduled, but we are hopeful that we can come together virtually in May and perhaps in-person in August to celebrate the successes of our seniors.  We have established a graduation planning committee that will be looking at many creative ideas to preserve this important event in your lives.  We will keep you posted on our progress and we look forward to having your input as well.

Parents, many of us who are parents, grandparents and caregivers deeply appreciate the challenges of supporting your student’s learning at home while balancing your own jobs and responsibilities.  We are trying to do our best to support your family and your student.  As I mentioned in a previous letter perhaps there will be days when you think we are not doing enough and days where you think we are expecting too much.  Please speak up.  It’s only through your feedback that we can reach a good balance of continuous learning without unnecessary burdens.  None of us chose this option for teaching and learning so please don’t place unnecessary stress on yourself, just do your best.  That’s what all of us are trying to do.

To all our TSD staff, I thank you for your resiliency and adaptability.  I know you feel the pressure to teach as well as the need to just listen and be there for our students and families.  The Commissioner of Education in Texas keeps telling Superintendents to leave space for grace in these difficult times and I say the same to you.  We’re going to do many things right and we’re going to make some mistakes or maybe some omissions as we continue to figure out the best way to do things.

We are on top of the business continuity of operating our school during this crisis.  We have a strong leadership team that is juggling all the moving parts.  We are among the very fortunate to have our jobs and our incomes in tact so I hope that is one less worry for staff.

Until we are back together again, stay strong, stay well, keep practicing good hygiene and social distancing, and don’t forget your masks out in public.

Han pasado casi dos semanas desde mi última actualización. Tenía la esperanza de que escucháramos de los líderes estatales acerca de cualquier otro cierre escolar más allá de la Orden Ejecutiva hasta el 4 de mayo, pero eso aún no ha sucedido. Hasta ahora, Austin ISD es el único distrito escolar del centro de Texas que ha anunciado el cierre por el resto del año escolar.

Varios de ustedes han preguntado sobre la cancelación de actividades y haré todo lo posible para solucionarlo. Estoy procediendo bajo la suposición de que no volveremos a abrir este año escolar académico. Además, incluso si el Gobernador levantara el cierre de escuelas, vería muchas más complejidades para reabrir TSD que para otros distritos escolares locales debido a nuestro programa residencial.  Siguiendo esta suposición, creo que es razonable suponer que todos los eventos y actividades al final de la escuela se cancelan. Dear TSD Community:

You hear it all the time during flu season: wash your hands to prevent the spread of flu. You may have heard advice encouraging you to do the same to stop the spread of COVID-19. But do you know why this simple practice works so effectively? Washing your hands with soap and water breaks up the molecules of the virus and washes them away, preventing the virus from infecting you or others.

To be able to effectively and reliably break up the virus cells, you must wash your hands thoroughly and vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Doing this can be incredibly effective! In fact, a study showed that when a group of elementary aged school children participated in supervised handwashing 2-4 times per day, the spread of a similar virus was reduced by 47%

While it is important to wash your hands, it is also important that we all regularly disinfect surfaces.

COVID-19 has been shown to live for up to three days on various surfaces. If you must leave your home for essential services, be sure to wash your hands as soon as you return and disinfect any surfaces you may have touched. If someone in your home is ill, it’s also important to regularly disinfect. Applying soap and water plus commonly used disinfectants to frequently touched surfaces will break up the virus and carry it away, in the same way soap kills and carries away the virus on your hands.

Dear Staff,

On March 24th Travis County along with Williamson County issued a “stay at home” order effective Tuesday at 11:59 pm and continuing to April 13. We have received many questions about this order. Though we should all do our part to limit our movement around the community and reduce our contacts by 90%, this order does not change our status as an essential business operation as both a school and a state agency. This was further confirmed by the Governor’s office.

For those of you able to work remotely and continue our mission to serve students and their families, you should definitely continue to do so. Our intent is to continue operating, in keeping with our understanding of applicable law and the guidance provided by public health authorities.

By now most of you should have developed your work plans with your Supervisors. This period school closure on campus provides our non-instructional staff the unique opportunity to complete long overdue training, participate in sign language professional development, accomplish critical projects and do a lot of planning and organizing that takes a back burner during our regular schedules.

Planning to operationalize our online teaching is underway. Selecting platforms, determining delivery methods, establishing schedules and monitoring is being addressed in all departments at all grade levels. We still have a duty to promote mastery of IEP goals and grade-level standards. This is emphasized daily in our TEA calls.

Your safety and well-being are important to us. As we continue to take preventative measures, please remember to continue to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, wipe down work surfaces and maintain social distancing, and work from home if you can. Also, notify us if you are unable to work because you are sick or for other reasons related to the coronavirus (e.g. quarantine, isolation, care for a sick family member, a family member diagnosed with the coronavirus, childcare issues relating to school closings, etc.). Rosalinda in HR will help provide guidance in these circumstances.

At this time our closure date is being extended to April 13. This comes as no surprise to most of us but I feel the duty to communicate such to families and staff.

Estimada comunidad de TSD,

TSD suspenderá las operaciones escolares normales hasta el 3 de abril, y los estudiantes regresarán a la escuela el 6 de abril (los estudiantes del dormitorio el 5 de abril), a menos que las condiciones justifiquen una extensión del cierre de la escuela. Como todos saben, esta pandemia global está cambiando rápidamente. La ciudad de Austin ha ordenado la prohibición de todas las reuniones de más de 250 personas hasta el 1 de mayo. Esta restricción afectará a nuestras escuelas, y a nuestro modelo de educación tradicional.

Nuestro equipo de liderazgo está finalizando actualmente un plan de opciones de aprendizaje continuo para que nuestros estudiantes mantengan la continuidad de la instrucción en caso de que necesitemos cerrar por un período de tiempo más largo. Entendemos que las soluciones apropiadas variarán según las necesidades individuales de los estudiantes y los niveles de grado. Dear TSD Staff, Parents, Guardians, Visitors and Community Members,

Since late January we have been tracking the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and offering guidance from the CDC and regular updates to our community.  We have emphasized proper hygiene, escalated campus cleaning and disinfecting, and provided guidance for travel outside the US, including rules for self-confinement.

We will continue that practice.  However, with the disease now established in the US, and with spring break and major holidays coming up shortly, we are intensifying our institutional response.

I write now to advise our visitors, colleagues, sister Deaf Schools, University partners, athletics, extracurricular and cocurricular partners, and those with TSD facility reservations that we are reviewing all our standard practices with regard to the following:

• hosting or traveling to athletic competitions with large groups of attendees,
• any out of state travel that is not essential; particularly to areas with high infection rates,
• possible cancellation of all visitors to the campus,
• use of our facilities by outside groups,
• school field trips and special end of year trips where crowds are gathered.

Our leadership team is working on providing guidance on the above events and we will communicate on a regular basis as we make these decisions.  As we make these decisions, we will consider the following:

1. How many people will attend and will they be in close quarters?
2. How many participants will be coming from abroad, or from US locations with high infection rates?
3. What do we know about the individuals attending or participating?
4. What is the risk to our staff and students in hosting, traveling or participating in this event?

In addition to this we will be reviewing what our action plan would be in the unlikely event of an outbreak of some kind on the TSD campus.

This is a very fluid situation and we ask for your patience as we navigate through it.  We have created a new webpage to keep you informed about the latest information and cancellations as a result of COVID-19.
