All About Me – Alton Markel

STEM Teacher

Hi, my name is Alton Markel, and I’m a STEM teacher and middle school football coach at Texas School for the Deaf. I’m also a proud TSD alum, and it's an honor to now teach and coach in the same school that helped shape who I am. This is my fourth year at TSD.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Deaf Education. In the classroom, I focus on hands-on, project-based learning that encourages students to explore real-world problems through science, technology, engineering, and math. I love helping students develop creative solutions and build confidence through trial, error, and success.

In addition to teaching, I also coach middle school football. Sports have been a huge part of my life, and I enjoy helping young athletes build skills, discipline, and teamwork both on and off the field.

Outside of work, I’m a huge sports fan — you’ll definitely find me cheering for the Baltimore Ravens. I also enjoy just about anything outdoors: snowboarding, hiking, biking, swimming, pickleball, and running.

Most importantly, I’m a husband and proud dad. My favorite time is spent with my wife, our two kids, and our dog, whether we’re out exploring or just relaxing together.

My goal at TSD is to give back to the community that shaped me — by helping students discover their strengths, challenges, and prepare for life beyond the classroom through both STEM education and athletics.
