Adult Curriculum for Community, Employment, and Social Skills (ACCESS)

Relationship Safety

Relationship skills are critical to success in life and work. Having the ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, resist peer pressure, and collaborate are essential in all human interaction. These skills are fundamental to success in school and in work.

 

Key topics to cover in a Relationship Safety class:

  • Self-Awareness (who am I? describe myself)
  • Personal Hygiene 
  • Making a personal decision (rumors, red flags)
  • Family, peers, community, and society 
  • Healthy Relationship (respect, trust, honesty, open communication & compromise)
  • Unhealthy Relationship (unacceptable behaviors such as  jealousy, possessiveness, controlling, isolation from friends and family, name-calling and verbal abuse, threats and intimidation, physical violence & sexual coercion)
  • Setting Boundaries (what boundaries are and why they are important, how to clearly communicate your boundaries, respecting your partner’s boundaries)
  • Sexual Consent (how to ask for or give consent, saying no and respecting refusal) 
  • Etiquette
  • Online Safety  (sexting & cyberbullying)
  • Mental Health (understanding and navigating the challenges)
  • Sexual Health (sexual diseases such as sexually transmitted infections)
  • Recognizing Abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, digital. Warning signs of abuse & how to safely reach out for help)
  • Safety Planning (identifying support networks, creating a safe environment, and knowing where to access resources)

Students learn various life skills through hands-on experience. Skills introduced include doing laundry, paying the rent & utilities, cooking, childcare, and many more
