Battle of the Books: A TSD Tradition of Reading and Teamwork

The Battle of the Books is a national reading competition hosted by Gallaudet University that challenges Deaf and hard-of-hearing students across the country to read a selection of diverse books and test their comprehension, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. Since its inception, the program has aimed to foster a lifelong love of reading, celebrate Deaf culture, and connect students through shared stories and spirited competition.

At the Texas School for the Deaf, Battle of the Books has become a proud middle school tradition where students read, discuss, and collaborate to prepare for both preliminary and playoff rounds. Each team—identified by color divisions such as Blue and Buff—works together to analyze plots, characters, and themes while developing communication and leadership skills.

We’re thrilled to announce that both our Blue and Buff teams have advanced to the regional playoffs this December! Their hard work, enthusiasm, and teamwork during the preliminaries truly exemplify what TSD students can achieve when they put their hearts and minds together. Congratulations to all our readers and coaches—your dedication inspires us all! 📚💙💛
