Middle School

Winter weather led to school closures on January 27–28 due to extreme cold and icing, and while one day is covered by built-in minutes, March 23 will serve as the inclement weather make-up day with school in session at 8:00am and a regular residential return on Sunday, March 22.

We want to reassure our students, staff, and families that TSD remains committed to a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment, with clear protocols for any law enforcement presence, including ICE.

TSD’s Academic Bowl is holding open practice after school every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30–4:30pm, giving high school students and 8th graders a chance to experience this fast-paced, team-based academic competition with no pressure.

This fall, Dr. Brendan Stern of Gallaudet University visited the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) to lead an engaging debate workshop with middle and high school students. The interactive sessions introduced students to the fundamentals of debate through hands-on activities, mini-debates, and strategic drills designed to build critical thinking, confidence, and expressive skills. Students responded with enthusiasm, energy, and a clear curiosity about how debate works both in and beyond the classroom.

The Family Storytelling Project invites families to share things that reflect their experiences and traditions to learn from one another through shared stories.

Check out this exciting opportunity from NTID Youth Programs at RIT, sponsored by Sorenson! Deaf middle and high school students can join free online gaming sessions that build community, teamwork, and inclusion—featuring popular games like Rocket League, Fortnite, and Super Smash Bros.

Join us for an informative session on the Specialized Telecommunications Assistance Program (STAP). STAP is a voucher program that offers financial assistance to people with qualifying disabilities, enabling them to obtain specialized equipment that makes telephone communication easier.

TSD Student Life is excited to continue the Pickleball Club and expand participation to include Middle School students alongside High School students. The club begins Mondays on January 12, 2026, runs throughout the spring semester, and offers opportunities for optional Wednesday Ladder League play, with middle and high school teams selected through tryouts to potentially compete in the National Deaf Youth Pickleball Tournament at Gallaudet University.

We are excited to remind our Middle School families about our upcoming Winter Dance Party Celebration happening on Wednesday, December 17, from 5:00–8:00 PM in Clinger Gym. This festive evening is a great opportunity for students to come together, enjoy music, games, and celebrate the season with friends

Our students will participate in two meaningful activities focused on service and creativity. A small group of 8th graders will prepare lunch for families at the Ronald McDonald House near Dell Children’s Hospital, while 6th graders will create colorful, uplifting rock designs to be displayed throughout the middle school, spreading compassion, positivity, and encouragement.

Join us for our Secondary Program Orientation to learn about High School courses, CTE pathways, and the many opportunities available to your student. Parents and guardians are encouraged to RSVP by January 5, 2026, using the link so we can plan accordingly.

Two high school students are leading a Snack Drive and Pull Tab Drive to support families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Their goal is to collect 1,000 individually wrapped snacks and fill a 3-gallon bucket with pull tabs, with donation boxes available in the lobby throughout January and February.

Para-Professional Appreciation Week at Middle School

This week, we are proud to honor the incredible Para-Professionals who support our Middle School students every single day. Our Para’s are the steady hands, compassionate hearts, and skilled educators who make learning accessible, meaningful, and joyful for all students. They assist with instruction, provide individualized support, reinforce routines, collaborate with teachers, and help ensure every classroom runs smoothly.

Our Middle School Para’s go above and beyond—whether helping a student master a new concept, supporting communication needs, guiding small-group work, or offering a calm presence during challenging moments. Their impact is woven into the daily life of our school community, and we are truly grateful for all they do.
