Celebrating Women’s Awareness Day

Celebrating Women’s Awareness Day

On March 12, our 6th-grade students celebrated Women’s Awareness Day with a cross-curricular program. In the morning, students explored women’s accomplishments at STEM and BLA/Social Studies stations. In STEM, they learned about women who broke barriers in aviation, studied key aviation vocabulary, and designed paper airplanes, collecting flight data to see which designs flew the farthest. In BLA/Social Studies, students read about inspiring women, watched short films about influential women, created self-portraits after learning about Frida Kahlo, and reflected on what they learned.

In the afternoon, students joined a Zoom panel with five inspiring Deaf women who shared their experiences and advice.  We greatly appreciate our panelists for donating their time and thoughts to our students!

  • Rebecca Giuntoli – First Deaf woman underwater welder & engineering trailblazer
  • Heather Suhr – Deaf triathlete who pushes limits
  • Dr. Deirdre Schlehofer – Global expert in Deaf culture and education
  • Dr. Laurene Simms – Leader in Deaf education and advocate for girls of color
  • Dr. MJ Bienvenu – Teacher and champion of Deaf culture
