At TSD, personal electronic devices may not be used from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Personal devices should not be visible and must remain stored in students’ backpacks during this time. This expectation helps us comply with state requirements while maintaining a learning environment where students can remain focused, engaged, and connected with their teachers and classmates.
What Happens if a Personal Device Is Used?
When a student does not follow the Personal Electronic Devices Policy, the incident will be documented and the device will be collected and stored in the 9–12 Administrative Office. Progressive consequences will apply:
- 1st Incident Report (IR): Device collected and LRD
- 2nd Incident Report: Device collected and ISS
- 3rd Incident Report and beyond: ISS, and the student will be required to leave the personal device in the Administrative Office each school day.
Important Accommodation Reminder: Students who use AirPods or headphones as an accommodation must have them connected to their TSD school-assigned laptop or iPad, rather than a personal electronic device. State law also provides exceptions when personal device use is required by an IEP, Section 504 plan or similar plan; for a documented medical need authorized by a qualified physician; or to meet certain health, safety, or school safety requirements.
Emergencies and Family Communication
We understand that families may need to reach their students during the school day. In the event of an emergency, parents and guardians should contact the 9–12 Administrative Office, and staff will assist in reaching their child. Likewise, if a student experiences an emergency during the school day, the student should report to the Administrative Office, where staff will help the student contact their family or receive the assistance they need.
We appreciate the partnership of our students and families as we implement these expectations consistently across our 9–12 program. Our goal is to meet Texas requirements while creating a school environment that supports student learning, engagement, communication, and safety.
