Counseling Resources
FAQ
How do I choose the right counselor?
Finding the right fit may take time. When reviewing counselor lists, please be aware that signing and communication skills are not screened or verified, and providers vary in how they communicate.
What should I consider? You may want to consider:
- Preferred communication style (ASL, SEE, Cued Speech, simultaneous communication, or spoken English)
- Comfort using an interpreter or CDI
- In-person versus virtual sessions
- Therapy approach (supportive listening vs. skills-based approaches such as CBT or DBT)
- Areas of specialization (children, teens, adults, family or couples counseling, trauma, anxiety/depression, behavioral support, autism or neurodiversity)
- Insurance, private pay, or sliding-scale options
- Experience working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing clients
That’s okay. It is common to meet with more than one provider before finding the right match.
