Expectations and Consequences
1. Arrive to class on time with all materials (books, pencils, notes, homework, laptops)
2. Complete and turn in homework on time.
a. If homework is not complete: consequence = 0 for homework completion on daily participation, worth 3 points total.
3. Keep your hands and feet to yourselves.
4. Show respect to everyone and do not disrupt other’s education
5. Follow all lab safety rules
a. First offense consequence = NO TOLERANCE, if you break a lab safety rule, you will sit out for the rest of the lab and receive a deduction on your lab for an incomplete lab. If the violation is serious, you may be suspended from labs for a given amount of time to be determined by the teacher and principal (depends on the seriousness of the violation).
GRADES
Your grades will be based on the following percentages:
Test/Quizzes—30%
Homework—15%
Lab Work/Class Work—40%
Participation—15%
Homework/Class work will be based on the following factors: handing in COMPLETED homework ON TIME, not copying from other students’ papers, and completing class work in class. Class work grades will also include participation grades for some activities. Please keep this in mind as we complete class activities.
Homework is due at the beginning of class.
Homework that is undone or incomplete on the day it is due will result in 0/3 points for homework completion on your daily participation grade. Any work not turned in by the end of the unit is an automatic 0% for the homework grade and NO points can be made up for this work.
If there is a problem, please contact me via email or in person and alert me to your situation. If applicable, more time will be given to complete work.
Tests/Quizzes will be based on the work covered in class! Please study for all tests, and be ready for pop (surprise) quizzes.
Lab Work Grades will be based on your work that you do during our labs. This will include (but is not limited to) participation, following procedures correctly, and completing lab reports. Your lab work grade will also include your science journal work.
Projects will be explained as we do them. If a student chooses to turn in a project after the due date, penalties will apply depending on the project. Projects may be graded as class work, test/quiz or lab work, depending on the nature of the project.
Participation is a daily grade based on our classroom expectations. There are 3 available points for each of these categories: on time; bring all materials (book, laptop, notes, homework, pens/pencils); keep hands and feet to yourself; and show respect to all, for a total of 12 points each class block.
MAKE UP WORK
1. Make up work—i.e. missed tests, absent when homework is due, etc.— it is the student’s responsibility to turn in work and get new assignments.
2. When a student is absent on the day that work is assigned, the student has up to three days upon their return to turn in the assignment(s) for full credit.
3. Daily work assigned the day before an absence is due the day the student returns to class.
4. Make up exams/quizzes will be administered only before school or during lunch. After-school will depend on the teacher’s availability. Students must make an appointment with the teacher in either case. Missed appointments will result in a zero (0%) grade.
5. Because essays and projects are assigned one week to six weeks in advance, they are due on the assigned date. Late work policy will apply.
COPYING/CHEATING/PLAGIARIZING
If two or more people turn in homework that has been COPIED from each other, their grades will automatically be dropped to a 50% for that assignment. You MAY work together in a group, but the answers must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
If I catch you CHEATING during a test, your grade will automatically be a zero (0%) and a discipline report will be filled out. There will be no chance for a make up.
PLAGAIRIZING is saying someone else’s work is yours. It is the same thing as lying or stealing. Students caught plagiarizing will be written up with discipline to follow (usually ISS or a suspension). Plagiarizing includes cutting and pasting information directly from the Internet. The grade for said “work” would be a zero (0%) with no chance of making it up. If you need help citing sources or are concerned about a specific assignment, please see me and I will help you!
