Hello I’m Peter Bailey, PB for short, TSD’s Superintendent. I’m thrilled to have PB’s Corner back after a long hiatus. I do have some updates I’d like to share with you all. We are excited in starting our 169th school year, and we recently celebrated and welcomed our staff back last week and our students this week. Student enrollment is at about 500 and we are staffed with around 400 employees with 35 new employees so I’m excited about having a good start to the school year.
I know you may have heard of some things and wondered where my updates have been in this last year.
First and foremost, at our most recent graduation we had 32 Seniors graduate. As for our commencement speaker as you can recall our first recipient for the Claire Bugen Award of Merit was Lauren Ridloff, and our most recent recipient and commencement speaker was Nyle DiMarco. The awesome thing about him is that he was a former TSD student and returned as a commencement speaker which was really nice to celebrate. Most Superintendents hold a strong belief and value that the number of students you graduate should be your minimum target of students enrolled for the following year to keep enrollment stable. We have admitted roughly 47 students so we are maintaining our enrollment.
With all that being shared I’d like to shift to more school updates from the last year as well as share information of things that have taken place.
First update, if you remember I shared we would be installing Horse Statues here on campus. Now they are life size statues not actual horses. There are 4 Horse statues in front of this building and it is beautiful! The 4 Horses are a representation of the school. Now every graduating class will celebrate there with the installation of their class plaque around the base of the statues. If you ever have an opportunity to visit, please make sure to stop by the statue and take a look.
Some other news that I’m not sure you’ve seen just yet but we have a beautifully wrapped school bus with TSD’s colors, I’ll be sharing pictures of that. Having 1 bus wrapped presented us with an issue, it was such a hit EVERYONE wanted to use that 1 bus so I decided to wrap 3 of our vans also and I will share picture of that too. Having 4 wrapped vehicles allows travel to various games and events representing TSD beautifully. I was really excited to see that happen.
Now something new for TSD. Along with our website we will be launching an app. We will share more information on where to get the app from your app store and how to register for it so you can better access updates and events happening at TSD. We know sometimes navigating a website is time consuming so having an app version makes it convenient to access the same information.
Another update about our TSD gym. If you remember last time, I explained how we have 3 gyms: the Seeger Gym, the Clinger Gym, and the TSD Gym. “TSD Gym” got me thinking that it should have an official name. After a long wait that took some time in getting through the Legislative process for approval it’s finally been approved and has officially been renamed the Rives Gym. We will have opening ceremonies later in this month of August inviting some specified groups and Legislative Representatives to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony in the naming of the Rives Gym. Going forward when you see Rives Gym know that is our Middle School Gym and will no longer be referred to as TSD Gym.
I realize I’ve given a lot of information and there’s still more and I will continue this on a monthly basis.
The next event we have is Homecoming. We know traditionally this is a big annual event but this year will be a unique one. We have decided to host the Spikeout, which is the National Volleyball Tournament amongst Deaf Schools across the nation, alongside hosting the Cross Country Deaf National Tournament as well as having Homecoming which of course is our Homecoming Football Game. The Football game that evening will be against the New Mexico School for the Deaf, now it will be 6-man football rather than 11-man. That makes for a packed day for Homecoming, for more information check our website and more updates will be sent out so you’re aware. Come out to our Homecoming to see all the activities and action throughout the day.
That’s not it, that day also includes our Alumni Reunion which happens annually for Alumni to celebrate. They give recognition to the class celebrating their 50th class reunion, they also recognize those being inducted into their Hall of Fame as well as their Alumni Annual Meeting that starts off the first part of the day.
An update for the Alumni, we will finally have an official plaque mounted where the large foundation stones located on the front lawn have been placed. These stones are remnants of the old “Mule Towers building” that had been demolished. The stones were placed with no reference so many are unaware. I worked with the Alumni Association and we agreed on having a Ceremony & Ribbon cutting to celebrate the morning of Homecoming during the Alumni Association meeting time. Just a heads-up Alumni, your day will be very busy that day.
That wraps up most of the updates for you all. Now I do have some significant key information I’d like to share before other information starts to circulate. TSD has been reviewing some programs and received feedback from parents, families, students and staff in regards to our Middle School and High School. Traditionally you are familiar with the breakdown of school being: Elementary, Middle School, High School, and CTE.
This year we are making a shift in our vision to have a Secondary Program which includes 7th-12th grades and Elementary being 1st-6th but are currently structured 1st-5th, 6th-8th as middle school and 9th-12th as High School. We are evaluating a shift to 7th-12th and Elementary being 1st-5th but we have not reached that shift just yet. The shift we are currently making is to borrow Karl Hummel, who has been our long standing High School Principal, and asked him to run our Middle School(6th, 7th, & 8th grades) while others continue to run 9th -12th, allowing for a year to observe, rebuild, and structure so that by next year we have 1 Secondary program. If you are wondering why Karl is not in the High School area this is the reasoning behind the move to build a strong cohesiveness for a Secondary program.
Having 1 program doesn’t work with 2 separate Principals with separate visions but rather 1 Principal to bring them together so please bear with us in this change and reach out if you see something need more information on. In this change we are making sure TSD is prepared for future changes rather than staying at status quo, making sure we keep up with current trends. We will continue to have our CTE courses but there will be 4 programs offered that students can choose from to better prepare them for future careers. For example, 8th grade starts the exploration of their preferences so that by 9th and 10th grade students can narrow their focus and by 11th and 12th grade students are solid in their pathways for their future.
We are working with different businesses that will help our students in their Junior and Senior years to gain internships and have better footing in applying and obtaining positions, or even obtaining licenses or certifications so that by the time they graduate they are already securing work with their credentials, whether it be plumbing, HVAC or other careers requiring these credentials. This way students aren’t waiting until they graduate to then gain those credentials. The future of technology is ever changing as you know we are always trying to keep up with it and TSD is preparing by looking at what’s ahead.
Now I know that was a lot of information, right? With all that being shared, I will try keeping you posted monthly so the information is not as vast and you have more frequent updates on what’s happening with the school and myself with the monthly updates.

La población estudiantil es de aproximadamente 500 alumnos y contamos con alrededor de 400 empleados, 35 de ellos nuevos, por lo que estoy muy emocionado por tener un buen comienzo de año escolar.
Sé que quizá hayan oído algunas cosas y se hayan preguntado dónde han estado mis actualizaciones durante este último año.
En primer lugar, en nuestra última graduación tuvimos 32 estudiantes del doceavo grado. En cuanto al orador de la ceremonia de graduación, como recordarán, nuestra primera galardonada con el Premio al Mérito Claire Bugen fue Lauren Ridloff, y nuestro galardonado más reciente y orador de la ceremonia de graduación fue Nyle DiMarco. Lo increíble de él es que fue alumno de TSD y regresó como orador de la ceremonia de graduación, lo cual fue muy bonito de celebrar. La mayoría de los superintendentes creen firmemente y valoran que el número de estudiantes que se gradúan debe ser el objetivo mínimo de estudiantes matriculados para el año siguiente, a fin de mantener estable el número de matriculados. Hemos admitido a unos 47 estudiantes, por lo que estamos manteniendo nuestra cifra de matriculados.
Dicho esto, me gustaría pasar a más novedades escolares del último año, así como compartir información sobre cosas que han sucedido.
Primera actualización: si recuerdan, les comenté que instalaríamos estatuas de caballos aquí en el plantel. Ahora bien, se trata de estatuas de tamaño real, no caballos de verdad. Hay cuatro estatuas de caballos frente a este edificio, ¡y están preciosas! Los cuatro caballos representan a la escuela. Ahora, cada generación de graduados celebrará allí con la instalación de una placa de su clase alrededor de la base de las estatuas. Si alguna vez tienen la oportunidad de visitarnos, no dejen de pasar por allí y echar un vistazo a las estatuas.
Otra noticia que quizá aún no hayan visto es que tenemos un autobús escolar con los colores de TSD y un bonito diseño. Compartiré fotos del mismo. Tener un solo autobús nos planteó un problema, ya que tuvo tanto éxito y TODOS querían utilizarlo, que decidí decorar también tres de nuestras camionetas y compartiré fotos de ellas también. Tener cuatro vehículos con el logotipo nos permite viajar a diversos partidos y eventos representando a TSD de manera magnífica. Me emocionó mucho ver que eso sucediera.
Ahora hay algo nuevo para TSD. Junto con nuestro sitio web, lanzaremos una aplicación. Compartiremos más información sobre dónde obtener la aplicación en su tienda de aplicaciones y cómo registrarse para que pueda acceder mejor a las actualizaciones y eventos que suceden en TSD. Sabemos que a veces navegar por un sitio web lleva mucho tiempo, por lo que tener una versión de la aplicación facilita el acceso a la misma información.
Otra actualización sobre nuestro gimnasio TSD. Si recuerdan la última vez, les expliqué que tenemos tres gimnasios: el gimnasio Seeger, el gimnasio Clinger y el gimnasio TSD. El «gimnasio TSD» me hizo pensar que debería tener un nombre oficial. Después de una larga espera, ya que llevó algún tiempo pasar por el proceso legislativo para su aprobación, finalmente ha sido aprobado y ha sido renombrado oficialmente como Gimnasio Rives. A finales de este mes de agosto celebraremos una ceremonia de inauguración a la que invitaremos a algunos grupos específicos y a representantes legislativos para que participen en la ceremonia de inauguración del Gimnasio Rives. A partir de ahora, cuando vean el Gimnasio Rives, sepan que es nuestro gimnasio de la escuela secundaria y que ya no se le llamará Gimnasio TSD.
Sé que he dado mucha información y aún hay más, así que continuaré con esto mensualmente.
El próximo evento que tenemos es el Homecoming (Bienvenida a exalumnos). Sabemos que tradicionalmente se trata de un gran evento anual, pero este año será único. Hemos decidido organizar el Spikeout, que es el Torneo Nacional de Voleibol entre escuelas para sordos de todo el país, además de organizar el Torneo Nacional de Campo Traviesa para Sordos y celebrar el Homecoming, que por supuesto es nuestro partido de fútbol americano de bienvenida. El partido de fútbol americano de esa noche será contra la Escuela para Sordos de Nuevo México, ahora será fútbol americano de 6 jugadores en lugar de 11. Eso hace que el día del Homecoming esté repleto de actividades. Para obtener más información, consulte nuestro sitio web y le enviaremos más actualizaciones para que esté al tanto. No solo eso, ese día también se celebra nuestra Reunión de Exalumnos, que se celebra anualmente para que los exalumnos puedan celebrar. Se rinde homenaje a la promoción que celebra su 50º aniversario, se reconoce a los que ingresan en el Salón de la Fama y también celebra la Reunión Anual de Exalumnos, que da comienzo en la primer parte del día.
Una actualización para los exalumnos: por fin colocaremos una placa oficial en el lugar donde se encuentran las grandes piedras de cimentación situadas en el jardín delantero. Estas piedras son restos del antiguo edificio «Mule Towers», que fue demolido. Las piedras se colocaron sin ninguna referencia, por lo que muchos desconocen su origen. Trabajé con la Asociación de Exalumnos y acordamos celebrar una ceremonia y una inauguración para conmemorar la mañana del Homecoming durante la reunión de la Asociación de Exalumnos. Solo un aviso para los exalumnos: ese día estarán muy ocupados.
Con esto concluimos la mayor parte de las novedades para todos ustedes. Ahora bien, tengo alguna información importante que me gustaría compartir antes de que empiece a circular otra información. TSD ha estado revisando algunos programas y ha recibido comentarios de padres, familias, estudiantes y personal con respecto a nuestra escuela secundaria y preparatoria. Tradicionalmente, están familiarizados con la división de la escuela en: primaria, secundaria, preparatoria y CTE. Este año estamos cambiando nuestra visión para tener un programa secundario que incluya los grados 7º a 12º y la primaria del 1.º al 6º, pero actualmente está estructurado del 1º al 5º, del 6.º al 8.º como secundaria y del 9º al 12º como preparatoria. Estamos evaluando un cambio al 7º al 12º y la primaria del 1º al 5.]º, pero aún no hemos llegado a ese cambio. El cambio que estamos realizando actualmente consiste en pedirle a Karl Hummel, quien ha sido nuestro director de preparatoria durante mucho tiempo, que se encargue de nuestra escuela secundaria (6º, 7º y 8º grados), mientras que otros continúan a cargo de los grados 9º a 12º, lo que nos dará un año para observar, reconstruir y estructurar, de modo que para el próximo año tengamos un solo programa secundario. Si se preguntan por qué Karl no está en el área de la escuela preparatoria, esta es la razón detrás de la decisión de crear una fuerte cohesión para el programa secundario. Tener un solo programa no funciona con dos directores separados con visiones diferentes, sino que es mejor tener un solo director que los una a ambos, así que les pedimos que tengan paciencia con este cambio y se comuniquen con nosotros si necesitan más información. Con este cambio, nos aseguramos de que TSD esté preparada para futuros cambios en lugar de quedarnos estancados en el statu quo, garantizando que nos mantenemos al día con las tendencias actuales. Seguiremos impartiendo nuestros cursos de CTE, pero se ofrecerán cuatro programas entre los que los estudiantes podrán elegir para prepararse mejor para sus futuras carreras profesionales. Por ejemplo, en 8º grado se empieza a explorar las preferencias de los estudiantes, de modo que en 9º y 10º grado puedan reducir sus opciones y en 11º y 12º grado tengan claro el camino que quieren seguir en el futuro. Estamos trabajando con diferentes empresas que ayudarán a nuestros estudiantes de onceavo y doceavo grado a conseguir prácticas y a tener una mejor posición a la hora de solicitar y obtener puestos de trabajo, o incluso a obtener licencias o certificaciones, de modo que cuando se gradúen ya tengan asegurado un trabajo con sus credenciales, ya sea en plomería, climatización u otras carreras que requieran estas certificaciones. De esta manera, los estudiantes no tienen que esperar hasta graduarse para obtener esas certificaciones. El futuro de la tecnología está en constante cambio, como saben, siempre intentamos estar al día y TSD se está preparando para ello analizando lo que nos depara el futuro. Ahora bien, sé que ha sido mucha información, ¿verdad? Dicho esto, intentaré mantenerlos informados mensualmente para que la información no sea tan extensa y tengan actualizaciones más frecuentes sobre lo que está sucediendo con la escuela y conmigo mismo con las actualizaciones mensuales.
