As we move into April, our middle school students will participate in two important assessments: the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) by NWEA. These assessments play a key role in helping us understand student learning, measure academic growth, and guide instruction. STAAR evaluates how well students have mastered grade-level standards, while MAP—aligned with the Texas School for the Deaf’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)—provides valuable insight into each student’s individual academic progress over time.
MAP testing is especially important because it shows how much your child has grown academically throughout the year. Unlike STAAR, which measures proficiency at a specific point in time, MAP is a growth-based assessment that adapts to each student’s learning level. Together, these assessments give teachers and families a more complete picture of student achievement and help us continue to support each learner effectively.
According to the April assessment calendar, STAAR testing will take place throughout the month, beginning with Reading assessments (April 8–9), followed by 8th Social Studies (April 14), 8th Science (April 16), and Math (April 22–23). MAP testing will occur at the end of the month, with Reading on April 28 and Math on April 30. We encourage families to review these dates and help students come prepared and confident on their testing days. It is also equally important that parents/students take time to reflect on the importance of doing their best on the assessments, with the overall aim of seeing student growth on both assessments.
To support success, students should get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. It’s also important that students come prepared with fully charged devices. Sixth- and seventh-graders will use classroom iPad sets, while eighth-graders must bring their school-issued iPads fully charged each day of testing. Encouraging a positive mindset, reducing stress, and reminding students to do their best can make a big difference. We appreciate your partnership in helping our students show what they know and celebrate their academic growth!
