Welcome to TSD!

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Texas School for the Deaf!

My name is Cynthia Michener (Hernandez).  Michener is my legal last name, and Hernandez is my maiden name — I keep “Hernandez” with my name because it’s a meaningful part of my identity.  I’m excited to be back for another year as the Secondary Program Lead Teacher Assistant!

This year marks my fifth year in the Instructional Department, after 13 years of experience in different areas at TSD. I graduated from Texas School for the Deaf, Class of 1991 — proud to be part of the TSD family!  This place is home to me.  TSD shaped my journey, and it means the world to be able to give back here.

I earned a certificate in Photography and later completed my Associate of Arts in General Studies.  I’m currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Deaf Education — lifelong learning is definitely my thing!

Outside of work, you’ll likely find me thrifting for treasures, crafting, playing pickleball, roller skating, or enjoying time with family and friends.  I also love all things outdoors — camping, hiking, stand-up paddling — you name it!

I had two tiny Yorkiepoo pups, Peanut and Smokey, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year.  Now, I share life with Pepper, my feisty black long-haired Chihuahua — because, well, you know how Chihuahuas are! 🐾

And full confession: I have a fun little obsession with colorful pens and stickers.  I just can’t resist them!

Go Rangers!
