Welcome to U.S. History Classroom #111
Hello! Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year. I'm Kristen Chapman, and I'm entering my 18th year of teaching. I'm excited to be back at the Texas School for the Deaf after taking 7 years off to raise my two youngest boys and having lived in the Washington, DC, area before returning to Austin, Texas, 2 summers ago.
From the moment I stepped back onto campus, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. The Texas School for the Deaf has always held a special place in my heart and remains, without question, a leader in Deaf education. Before taking time off to raise my family, I spent over 7 wonderful years teaching U.S. History here—and I’m so grateful to be back.
I also coordinate a group of students to attend the Capitol Connection trip to Washington, D.C., in the spring. We take a closer look at Washington, D.C., to see how American history has shaped us into who we are today. More information can be found at this link: CEASD: The Capital Connection.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy staying active, trying out new local restaurants, spending time with family & friends, and visiting places in Austin, TX that hold special memories of our beloved son, Aydan, who bravely battled brain cancer and passed away in 2016. My firstborn daughter, Annika, is currently a junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, and my younger sons, Austin & Andrew, are in 1st and 3rd grade.
Teaching has always felt natural to me. I hold a degree in History from Gallaudet University and a Master’s in Special Education/Deaf and Hard of Hearing from Texas Tech University. It brings me immense joy to see my students grow and prepare for life beyond graduation, and I truly believe that a strong education lays the foundation for future success. I'm excited to partner with you and your child as we explore United States history together. Please feel free to browse the course materials, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
