Welcome to the new school year! My name is Coleen Utzman, and I am excited to be your child’s Middle School Social Studies and Bilingual Language Arts teacher in Room 218 at the Texas School for the Deaf. I look forward to learning and growing together with your children this year.
Important Changes This Year
If you have had a child attend middle school here before, please note:

Social Studies will now be one period in length.

Bilingual Language Arts will be a double period (two class periods).
About Me
I have been teaching for over 15 years and hold a master’s degree in Education. My passion for Social Studies comes from a love of exploring different cultures and understanding how history shapes our world. My passion for Language Arts comes from the belief that strong reading, writing, and communication skills open doors to every part of life.
What Students Will Learn

In Social Studies, we will explore history, cultures, and current events through discussions, projects, and hands‑on activities.

In Bilingual Language Arts, we will strengthen reading, writing, and communication skills through engaging lessons, creative projects, and real‑world applications.
My Classroom Goals
I want every student to feel valued, supported, and confident in their learning. Our classroom will be a place where students can ask questions, share ideas, and learn from one another.
